Do Fish Perceive Anaesthetics as Aversive?

This study addresses a fundamental question in fish welfare: are the anaesthetics used for fish aversive? Despite years of routine general use of many agents, within both scientific research and aquaculture, there is a paucity of information regarding their tolerance and associated behavioural responses by fish. This study examined nine of the most commonly used fish anaesthetic agents, and per...

Do GMM Phoneme Classifiers Perceive Synthetic Sibilants as Humans Do?

This study presents a psycholinguistically motivated evaluation method for phoneme classifiers by using non-categorical perceptual data elicited in a Japanese sibilant matching 2AFC task. Probability values of a perceptual [s]-[S] boundary, obtained from 42 speakers over a 7-step synthetic [s]-[S] continuum, were compared to probability estimates of Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) of Japanese [s...

Do Fish Perceive Illusory Motion?

Motion illusion refers to a perception of motion that is absent or different in the physical stimulus. These illusions are a powerful non-invasive tool for understanding the neurobiology of vision because they tell us, indirectly, how we process motion. There is general agreement in ascribing motion illusion to higher-level processing in the visual cortex, but debate remains about the exact rol...

Is the energy homeostasis system inherently biased toward weight gain?

We describe a model of energy homeostasis to better understand neuronal pathways that control energy balance and their regulation by hormonal signals such as insulin and leptin. Catabolic neuronal pathways are those that both reduce food intake and increase energy expenditure (e.g., melanocortin neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus) and are stimulated by input from insulin and leptin. We...

How do judges learn from precedent?

Federal appellate judges cite cases by sister circuits. Why is that? Common wisdom holds that judges look to out-of-circuit cases for credible legal arguments -as persuasive precedent. But hard-core adherents of the attitudinal model (Segal and Spaeth 2002) – and certain cynical realists and critical legal studies scholars – might argue that judges decide in accordance with their policy or poli...
